Mission Statement
Sharing the joy of a cappella barbershop harmony.
Chapter Objectives
1. Provide family entertainment through
our annual shows and community performances. Perform no fewer than ten times
per year, including our show and cabaret, but not contests.
2. Support the Youth In Harmony
program by sponsoring local high school and/or college quartets and providing assistance to local school and community-based youth music programs.
3. Support quartet singing with at least
one-half of the active membership singing in organized quartets.
4. Participate in at least one spring Barbershop Harmony Society chorus contest and any other contests for which we qualify;
consistently achieve solid B scores in all judging categories.
5. Provide a well-rounded singing program by including a limited amount of other a cappella music.
6. Hold two major membership
drives each year with a goal of recruiting new members equal to
twenty percent of the current total chapter membership.
7. Seek, develop, use and enhance the skills and talents of each member.
Introduction Statement
This information will help you
understand the Palo Alto - Mountain View chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society and what we expect
from our members.
We require that each of our members be
committed to each other, to the music we sing, and to personal improvement of their own musical and performance skills. Singing isn't a
casual hobby for us. We work at singing
well, because singing well brings us joy. We share our joy with others.
We've qualified to compete at the Far
Western District Divisional Convention for more than ten consecutive years, and
have steadily improved over this time. We're now a mid-B level chorus; we expect our members to perform at
this level, and to participate in these contests as well as in numerous community
performances.
While we expect prospective members to
have some singing experience, we also understand the need to
teach the Barbershop Harmony Style to those new to the craft. We encourage quartet singing as a way to
teach the style and facilitate individual improvement.
We have very stable chapter management,
are financially sound, and have an increasing membership. We currently have over forty actively performing members.
